welwitschia

The Namib desert, covering approximately 31,200 square miles (80 900 km²) is considered to be one of the world's oldest (second to Atacama desert in Chile by some estimates) and famous deserts in the world. The Namib desert is located in the southern western part of Angola.

A good number of species of plants and animals call this vast arid and barren land home. The most famous being the Welwitschia mirabilis - a Gnetopsida class plant living around 2 thousand years. Welwitschia which is a shrub-like plant, produces only two leaves, which continue to grow to several meters long throughout the entire life of the plant, and because of the fraying and shredding by the desert winds, the older plants seem to have several leaves. Scientists regard this plant as a dwarf tree that survives the harsh conditions of the desert thanks to approximately 40 metre deep roots that absorb and store water.
